Some days are planned down to the last detail, and some become an occasion simply because everyone decides to treat them like one.
After spending part of Saturday working on Halloween preparations, the girls and I had plans to see Practical Magic 2. I already wanted the movie to feel like more than an ordinary trip to the theater, so we leaned into a little witchy whimsy and made a day of it.
I wore a berry-colored sundress that felt just right for the occasion. My other daughter came along too; she wore a maxi skirt and a long-sleeved black top. It was still very much Arizona outside, but we were dressed for the mood rather than the weather.
We saw the movie in the XL theater, which made it feel even more like an event. There is something about settling into those oversized seats with a giant screen in front of you that makes an afternoon movie feel special before it even begins.
Afterward, we stopped at HomeGoods for a little window-shopping. We did not turn it into a major shopping trip; it was simply one more part of being out together, wandering the aisles and pointing out the things each of us liked.
Then we finished the day with revolving sushi. Watching the plates travel past the table and choosing what to try gave dinner its own bit of fun. It was casual, a little different from our usual routine, and exactly the right ending to the day.
Nothing we did was especially elaborate. It was a movie, a quick stop in a store, and dinner. But making an occasion of it changed the way the whole day felt.
I think that is what I want to remember more often: a day does not have to be a holiday, a birthday, or some carefully planned milestone to become a memory. Sometimes it only needs a little intention, the people you love, and the decision to enjoy it while it is happening.
